The Gold Coast Outdoor Advantage
We live in one of the best climates in Australia for outdoor living. Mild winters, warm summers, and enough sunshine to justify a proper outdoor space — not just a concrete slab with a portable BBQ.
A well-designed alfresco area extends your living space, adds genuine value to your home, and gets used year-round on the Gold Coast.
Covered vs. Open: Get This Right First
Covered Alfresco (Roofed)
The Gold Coast gets around 1,400mm of rain annually, most of it between December and March. A covered alfresco area means you use the space in all weather.
Options include:
- Insulated roofing panels (Cooldek/Stratco) — the most popular choice on the Gold Coast. Reduces heat, handles rain, clean lines.
- Timber or steel pergola with a Colorbond roof — traditional look, solid weather protection.
- Louvre roof systems (Vergola/Louvretec) — adjustable blades let you control sun and airflow. Premium option, typically $15,000-$30,000 installed.
Open Pergola
A slatted pergola with no solid roof gives you partial shade and a lighter feel. Works well for areas that don't need all-weather use. Consider adding shade sail tracks or a retractable awning for flexibility.
Outdoor Kitchen Essentials
An outdoor kitchen turns an alfresco from "nice to have" into the main entertaining space. Here's what matters on the Gold Coast:
Must-Have
- Built-in BBQ — go for 304-grade stainless steel minimum (316 if you're near the coast). Cheaper models rust within two years in our salt air.
- Bench space — at least 600mm either side of the BBQ for prep.
- Power and water — a weatherproof GPO and an outdoor tap make everything easier.
- Adequate lighting — you'll cook here at night more than you think.
Worth Considering
- Bar fridge — saves trips inside. Get a purpose-built outdoor model, not a repurposed indoor unit.
- Pizza oven — hugely popular right now. Wood-fired models start around $2,500 installed.
- Rangehood or extraction — important if the cooking area is close to the house or under a low ceiling.
- Sink with hot and cold — genuine convenience, not just a luxury.
Material Choices for the Gold Coast Climate
Our subtropical climate, salt air (especially in coastal suburbs from Coolangatta to Southport), and UV intensity demand specific materials.
Flooring
- Porcelain pavers — low maintenance, slip-resistant options available, won't fade. Our top recommendation.
- Natural stone (travertine, granite) — premium look but requires sealing every 1-2 years.
- Composite decking (Modwood, Trex) — timber look without the maintenance. Better than real timber in our climate.
- Timber decking — beautiful but demanding. Spotted gum or Merbau need oiling twice yearly.
Benchtops
- Engineered stone — works outdoors if it's not in direct sustained sunlight (UV can yellow resins over time).
- Natural granite — the best outdoor benchtop material. Heat-proof, UV-stable, nearly indestructible.
- Concrete — industrial look, needs sealing, can stain. Popular for a raw aesthetic.
Cabinetry
- Marine-grade polymer or HDPE — purpose-built for outdoor use. Won't swell, rot, or delaminate.
- Powder-coated aluminium — lightweight, rust-proof, modern look.
- Avoid standard MDF or particleboard — it will fail within a year outdoors on the Gold Coast.
Council and Building Requirements
On the Gold Coast, covered outdoor structures may require building approval:
- Under 10m² and not attached to the house — typically exempt.
- Over 10m² or attached to the dwelling — usually requires a building approval through a private certifier.
- If you're in a flood overlay zone — additional requirements may apply. Many Gold Coast properties are affected.
We handle the approval process as part of every outdoor renovation project.
Budget Ranges
| Project | Typical Range |
| --------- | --------------- |
| Covered patio (insulated roof, 20-30m²) | $12,000 - $25,000 |
| Alfresco with outdoor kitchen | $30,000 - $70,000 |
| Full outdoor room (enclosed, fans, lighting) | $40,000 - $90,000 |
| Premium alfresco (louvre roof, full kitchen, built-in seating) | $70,000 - $150,000+ |
Design Tips That Make a Difference
1. Orient for breeze — Gold Coast sea breezes come from the northeast. Position open sides to catch them.
2. Fan placement — ceiling fans are essential. Plan one per 15m² of covered area.
3. Indoor-outdoor flow — bifold or stacking doors connecting the indoor living area to the alfresco multiply the sense of space.
4. Screening — consider retractable blinds or zip-track screens for insect protection and wind management in storm season.
5. Greenery integration — built-in planter boxes or a vertical garden wall softens hard surfaces and creates privacy.
